Emergency Medical Services
Applicant Information
This program is for students who desire a career in out-of-hospital emergency medicine. It prepares the student for state board certification and/or National Registry as an emergency medical technician and a paramedic. Skills will be developed for assuming the role as both a basic and advanced life support provider through a comprehensive program consisting of theory, skills laboratory, clinical practice and a pre-hospital field internship. Diploma, Certificate and associate degree programs are available upon meeting qualifications.
Fundamentals of Emergency Medical Technology and the laboratory accompanying have no course prerequisites and require only application to the college. Fundamentals of EMT and lab include 10 hours of lecture and 3 hours of lab per week, 24 hours in an emergency department, and participation in a minimum of five emergency rescue calls during 50 hours of field internships. Professional liability insurance is required for both EMT and paramedic students. No special program application is needed to enroll in EMT.
Enrollment in all other EMS technical course work requires submission of a Health Related Programs application. EMS courses must be done in sequence. Students are encouraged to refer to the catalog for specific prerequisites in science and technical courses. The Paramedic schedule includes lecture, lab, clinical, and field experiences.
A minimum grade of "C" (80%) must be achieved in all EMS courses to meet program and graduation requirements. Students seeking admission to the Emergency Medical Services (Paramedic) Program must first apply to the college. Upon successful completion of admission criteria an Emergency Medical Services application should be filed with the Health Related Programs Department. An applicant must have earned a minimum of a 2.0 cumulative grade point average to be considered for admission to the EMS/Paramedic Program.
