Theater - Valencia Character Company
Welcome
The Valencia Character Company is the main theater-producing entity
at Valencia Community College. Productions are held either in our
558-seat Performing Arts Center, or our more intimate Black Box
Theater, both located on the East Campus.
The season runs from October through June each school year, and
we produce four major productions per season, with variety and
educational opportunities for both students and audiences driving
the selection of plays. Recent productions have included major musicals,
avant-garde plays, classical drama, contemporary Broadway hits,
and favorite revivals. Valencia’s theater program also sponsors
an annual competition among playwrights who reside in Florida. We
solicit never-before-produced manuscripts each fall, which are read
and evaluated by a committee of readers. One script is selected,
and after extensive “workshopping” with staff, students
and writer, it is presented as a fully staged production in the
Black Box Theater. Acting and directing students also produce two
sets of student-directed one-act plays that are offered on consecutive
Wednesday afternoons in April.
Our next production will be Peter Weiss' drama, The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton under the Direction of Monsieur de Sade, better known as
MARAT/SADE.
The production opens Thursday, February 18, 2010, in the Black Box Theater on East Campus, with performances Thursday through Sunday through February 28. Curtain time is 7:30 except for Sundays, when it's 2 PM. Please call the Box Office at 407-582-2900 to purchase tickets in advance, or for further information.
