College Outcomes
General Education Program General education is the core preparation for lifelong learning. It fosters an intellectual curiosity that leads to exploring the foundations and the range of knowledge in the arts and sciences. The general education program fosters academic excellence, respect for self and others, the free exchange of ideas, and responsibility to the community. Specifically, the student will experience the perspectives of various disciplines which comprise the arts and sciences, and develop the ability necessary to evaluate social, cultural, and scientific bodies of knowledge, their historical development, continuing influence, and inter-relatedness; gain a foundation of knowledge within each of the various disciplines, balancing depth and breadth of knowledge; learn how to acquire, verify, organize, interpret, evaluate, present, and apply information; develop and apply analytical, critical, and creative reasoning; demonstrate competency and application of skills in written communication (reading and writing), oral communication (listening and speaking), mathematics, and compute use. It is expected that every General Education course at Tallahassee Community College foster a learning environment in which students are afforded opportunities to participate actively in their learning. This is achieved through processes such as the following: the use of reading, writing, listening, speaking, and/or other forms of self-expression; providing opportunities for information gathering, synthesis and analysis in solving problems and in critical thinking (including the use of the library, electronic/computer and other resources, and quantitative reasoning and interpretation, as applicable); engagement in cooperative learning, teamwork, and/or use of collaboration as problem solving tool; participation in course projects, laboratory exercises, and/or service learning projects; and class discussion. The General Education Program for the Associate in Arts degree is also designed to provide instruction in the communication and computation skill designated by the college Level Academic Skills Project (State Board of Education Rule 6A-10.031), and to meet course work, credit and grade performance requirements in State Board of Education Rule 6A-10.030.
