The College Security Department

The Valencia Community College Security Department is charged with ensuring the safety and security of the college community. The Security Department strives to fulfill its responsibility to each member of the college community by providing quality policies, services and information that will assist you in making the time that you spend here safe and enjoyable.

The mission of the security department is a commitment to supporting the education mission of the college by maintaining a maximum personal safety program which enhances the quality of life for all members of the college community.

The Security Department provides a full range of services including crime prevention services, traffic/parking enforcement, and assisting in crowd control for special events. The department maintains a close liaison with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies in implementing and coordinating campus security operations.

Jurisdiction, Structure and Authority

The Valencia Security Department is organized as a department of 68 security officers under the auspices of the office of the Vice President for Administrative Affairs. All officers are trained and licensed under the State of Florida Statutes Chapter 493. Officers also receive in-service training in the following areas:

  • CPR - all full-time career service employees are certified
  • First Aid - all full-time career service employees are certified
  • Emergency Evacuations Procedures

Security operations are supplemented with local law enforcement officers who are contracted for specific hours and locations. The Security Department is overseen by a Chief of Security with College-wide authority who is responsible for the direction and supervision of all security personnel.

The East and West Campuses serve as parent campuses to the satellite locations. Each parent campus has a Security Supervisor who serves as the immediate manager for campus security operations. If you have specific concern or need personal assistance you are advised to contact the Security supervisor who oversees your location. The East campus supervisor is responsible for East, Winter Park, and Mc Coy. The West campus supervisor is responsible for West, and the Downtown Center.  Osceola campus is overseen by a Security Supervisor who serves as the immediate supervisor for campus security operations.

Safety in the Workplace

  • When working late, make sure doors are locked.
  • Keep your purse in a locked cabinet or drawer. Never leave it on or underneath a desk.
  • Avoid using stairs in remote sections of a building.
  • Never prop doors open, especially fire doors, even for a short time.
  • Do not hold the door open for strangers.

Tips for Pedestrians

  • Be alert and conscious of your surroundings.
  • Utilize sidewalks where provided.
  • If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic.
  • Avoid walking out in front of moving vehicles.
  • Use available crosswalks when crossing service road.
  • Yield to vehicles when not crossing at a crosswalk.

Safety Tips For Vehicle Operators

  • Drive defensively: Anticipate the unexpected
  • Yield to all pedestrian traffic.
  • Always stop for pedestrians in crosswalks.
  • When turning, be especially watchful for pedestrians and bicycle traffic.
  • When passing pedestrians, reduce speed and maintain a safe distance.
