H1N1 (Swine) Flu and Campus Safety
The arrival of more than 37,000 students and the advent of the regular flu season as well as the prevalence of the novel H1N1 virus will increase the probability of a significant outbreak of influenza in the community and at Valencia. In response to that potential, we have been meeting regularly and have been participating with county health officials and researching federal and state guidelines to be better prepared.
We need your help to prevent the spread of flu at Valencia by following these guidelines.
Stay home if you have flu-like symptoms (fever, cough and/or sore throat, possibly with diarrhea and vomiting), for at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius) or signs of a fever. This is based on the recommendations of the CDC and County Health Department. If you are absent from classes due to the H1N1 virus, you should contact your professors to discuss and agree upon make-up work for the classes missed.
Keep informed and follow the steps suggested by the State Surgeon General to reduce your chances of becoming ill:
- Avoid close contact with people who are coughing or otherwise appear ill.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
- Wash hands frequently to lessen the spread of respiratory illness.
- Cover your cough and sneeze.
- People with respiratory illness should stay home from work or school to avoid spreading infections, including influenza, to others in the community.
In addition to approximately 1,000 lavatories spread throughout our facilities, we will be adding a number of sanitizer stations at key locations. We will also be running an ad campaign to remind people of these simple yet effective prevention methods.
