The Research Process: A Step-By-Step Guide

Use the links in the table below to navigate the Step-By-Step Guide.

Preliminary Steps - Overview

Steps in this section:

Writing a research paper is a process. The preliminary steps of this process involve laying the ground work for the more in depth research that you will do later. This is a time for planning and reflection on the topic.

Many students choose their topics hastily and rush through the planning stages.

In the long run, though, careful planning will save time and anxiety, and will help you produce a more thoughtful and focused paper.

Not only that, but the preliminary steps may also help you overcome the difficulty that many students feel in just getting started. If you have anxiety about starting a major research project or just tend to procrastinate, breaking the process into smaller bites -- and starting with a plan -- may help to motivate you.

Keep in mind that the research process is not necessarily linear; you may also find it necessary to revisit these steps after you have already begun gathering and evaluating information.
