Use the links in the table below to navigate the Step-By-Step Guide.

Gathering Information - Overview

Steps in this section:

This section of The Research Process will help you retrieve relevant information from Library resources and the Internet. The various handouts and tips given in the next three steps of The Research Process will help you effectively utilize these resources.

In addition, you can find contacts in your community, and include such sources as interviews, information from agencies, organizations, or embassies, documentaries, etc. Ask a librarian at the Information Desk (2nd floor, 6-201) for one of the following directories that may help you locate these resources:

  • Encyclopedia of Interest Groups and Lobbyists in the United States
    READYREF JK1118.N47
  • Public Interest Group Profiles
    READYREF JK1118.P79
  • Special Interest Group Profiles for Students
    READYREF JK1118.S688
  • The Encyclopedia of Associations
    READYREF HS 17 .G32

Or check out these web sites:

These sources on the Speech Table (2nd floor, 6-201) also contain lists of organizations and agencies related to the topic under discussion.
  • CQ Researcher
  • Contemporary World Issues
  • Current Controversies
  • Opposing Viewpoints

Again, keep in mind that research is a non-linear process. You may find that as your topic/focus evolves and changes as you research it, that you will need to return to some of these books, databases and web sites for a second or third time.
