Strengthening Relationships that Build Valencia

The Division of Institutional Advancement includes the Office of the Vice President for Institutional Advancement and three departments that report to the Vice President: College and Community Relations, Marketing and Media Relations, and Resource Development.

Faculty and staff receive services directly through all of these offices.

Office of the Vice President for Institutional Advancement
In addition to responsibility for the three departments that report to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, the Vice President is also responsible for the College's relationships with the Federal Government. The office monitors Federal policy that impacts the College and coordinates communications with Members of Congress and the staff of Federal agencies to ensure that Valencia's needs are taken into account at the Federal level.

Also, the Vice President serves as co-chair of the College Planning Council, and in that role is responsible for coordinating the strategic planning process of the College. The Council ensures that faculty and staff are provided with the opportunity to be involved in a collaborative process through which commitments are made to the future direction of the College and through which budget decisions are made in support of the strategic plan.

College and Community Relations
This Department provides support for efforts that strengthen:

  1. our relationships as colleagues at Valencia (for example, employee recognition programs);
  2. our relationships with the community we serve (for example, hosting on-campus events for the business community or ensuring College representation at functions of community and civic organizations);
  3. our internal learning, through coordination of the Leadership Valencia professional development series;
  4. Valencia's contributions to the learning of our colleagues nationally, through an annual series of Valencia conferences, which, in addition to sharing Valencia's learning with others, produce revenue to support the College's work;
  5. our relationships with students and alumni (for example through providing support for Commencement and for the activities of the Valencia Alumni Association).

Marketing and Media Relations
This Department directly supports Valencia's enrollment, communications, and public relations goals by:

  1. developing and executing an annual marketing plan aimed at contributing to the fulfillment of the goals in the enrollment management plan;
  2. providing professional design and photography services to faculty and staff for a wide variety of print and electronic publications;
  3. collaborating with the Office of Information Technology  to develop and maintain the College's web presence;
  4. maintaining effective relationships with the media that lead to public awareness of the College's many contributions to the community;
  5. developing and protecting Valencia's brand and image;
  6. supporting internal communications through publications such as the Bulletin.

Resource Development
This Department provides support to faculty and staff in seeking grants from public agencies and private and corporate foundations. (In the case of private funding sources, the Office collaborates with the Valencia Foundation.)

The Resource Development staff identify grant opportunities that will advance the College's work toward one or more of our strategic goals, identify faculty and staff involved in that area of our work, and collaborate with faculty and staff to develop grant concepts. Faculty and staff members with a need that they think might qualify for grant support can ask the Department staff to search for funding opportunities, as long as the need is in keeping with the College's strategic plan.

The Resource Development staff draft the grant proposals and budgets, which must be approved by the faculty and staff involved, as well as the College administration, prior to being submitted. The Office coordinates the internal approval process.

In cases in which faculty or staff are contacted by other colleges or organizations seeking a partnership with Valencia in a grant-funded activity, the Office of Resource Development coordinates the College's response, including the provision of letters of support and the development of agreements for Valencia's participation in a grant awarded to another entity.

Importantly, the Department provides grants management support in order to maximize the time that faculty and staff spend on the program supported, minimize the administrative burden to the project director and staff, and avoid any audit problems.
