High School Students
What Is Upward Bound?
Upward Bound is a federally funded program that helps students from
economically disadvantaged backgrounds, who have the potential to
be the first college graduate in their families. Its objective is
to provide such students with access to educational opportunities,
while simultaneously developing the skills needed to be independent,
contributing individuals.
Upward Bound students are involved in the program from the time
they are selected for participation until they graduate from high
school. The summer after graduation they will continue with the
program and enroll in two college courses.
Valencia's Program
The Valencia Upward Bound program is open to 25 students within
each high school it serves in Orange and Osceola Counties. Our program
is unique in that it is nonresidential. During the academic year,
students attend activities on Saturdays at Valencia's West or Osceola
campuses. Bus service has been arranged to bring students from their
homes to Valencia. Participants receive instruction in literature,
composition, humanities, mathematics, science, and foreign languages.
During the summer, students attend a full-time, six-week program
which is designed to further aid in the successful transition to
the postsecondary environment.
