MILEPOSTS AND MEASURES

Milepost 1: Degree seeking with a confirmed AS Degree/Certificate major

Students enrolled in an Associate in Science/Associate in Applied Science Degree or Certificate program must complete their educational goals and be professionally marketable in a much shorter period of time than many others. It is essential that these students begin to make the connections and receive the directions needed to plan a successful college experience early on in their Introduction to College.

Success Indicators

  • Transcripts received and evaluated
  • Confirmation of major through web site
  • Career plan completed in My Career Plan
  • College Prep coursework completed

Milepost 2: Completion of 15 – 29 college level credits

There are a number of gateway courses that Associate in Science/Associate in Applied Science Degree or Certificate program students must incorporate into their Educational Plan early on to allow them a natural progression throughout their degree program. Upon the completion of 15 credit hours, students should be well on their way to completing Foundation Technical Courses for their related degree programs.

Success Indicators

  • Successful completion of 2 career/certificate specific technical courses
  • Primary education plan coordinates with declared major
  • Joined appropriate atlas group

Milepost 3: Completion of 30 - 44 college level credits

There are a number of Associate in Science/Associate in Applied Science Degree Programs that have related Technical Certificates associated with them. Students who plan effectively can often complete the courses required to complete a Technical Certificate early in their educational path, while still progressing toward their degree. This can improve their marketability within the industry while they continue to build their portfolio for advancement.

Success Indicators

  • A secondary education plan for certificate if applicable
  • Degree compliance report saved for primary degree
  • Posted exemplary practice for job skills to portfolio

Milepost 4: Completion of 45 – 60 college level credits

Experience can be the determining factor to gaining a competitive edge in today's workplace. Effective career preparation is essential to a successful transition from school to work. Students who have completed 45 credit hours should have taken steps to enroll in Valencia’s Internship Program. Their resume is now a key portfolio item that should be developed to reflect completed courses, work and any related Technical Certificates obtained.

Success Indicators

  • Appropriate course work completed for awarding of certificate
  • Completion of appropriate coursework for enrolling in an internship
  • Resume posted to portfolio
  • Two possible career titles posted to My Career Plan basket

Milepost 5: Completion of 60+ college level credits

Students graduating with an Associate in Science/Associate in Applied Science degree should be registered with Placement Services so they can take advantage of services which include assistance in setting up interviews, resume referral service and job interview resource materials. Final preparation should be done to insure that graduation requirements have been met and that the student is ready for the school to work transition.

  • Register with placement office
  • Completed an application for graduation
  • Completed a final degree compliance audit
  • Career philosophy/ethical statement posted to portfolio

Milepost 6: Full-Time employment in career related position

Success Indicators
The ultimate goal for a majority of Associate in Science/Associate in Applied Science degree students is successful entry into the workforce in a high-wage, high-skill occupation. Once they have made this transition, students may discover the need for continued education within their area of industry and may return to Valencia to develop new skills.
