Professor John Scolaro of Valencia's Humanities Department will speak on "Poverty and the Power of Knowledge: A Human Response to the Surround of Force." He will present and critically evaluate Bureau of Census data regarding poverty, along with other independent sources, which may deviate from government data on poverty. The point is to show the dark future of those citizens who may never be able to extricate themselves from the condition of poverty. Included will be a discussion of the proper understanding of Earl Shorris' reference to the 'surround of force' as a component of multi-generational poverty. Following will be the rationale related to the nature of knowledge as a source of power for transcending the strictures of poverty. Examples will be included about how, derived from the humanities, the quest for knowledge in these diverse forms can help anyone recover the 'moral life of downtown.' The conclusion will argue for the adoption of a college-level credit course of study in the humanities as a viable method of restoring dignity and self-confidence to disadvantaged populations. Attendees will be invited to dialogue with Professor Scolaro on the different components of the presentation. This presentation will be held at Valencia's West Campus.
