John
Weyman's burial occurred on August 3, 2005 at
Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. Gary Shif, owner of Best
Cleaners, and the Director of a local Orlando Funeral Home worked
together with the Veterans Administration to arrange this significant
event. John Weyman was one of our first Clemente Course in the
Humanities students and was awarded two Certificates of Completion for
Parts 1 & 2 of the Clemente Course several years ago by Valencia
Community College's President, Dr. Sanford C. Shugart. (The

Project
presentation at the University Unitarian Universalist Society's Sunday
fellowship was exceptional! John Scolaro, Anna Scolaro, and Stephen
Davis, a former project student and current Valencia Community College
East Campus student, also spoke about different aspects of the project.
The presentation was followed by dialogue between project members and
all attendees. The success of the presentation was made possible by
Steve Hall, the Society's Minister, and by Dr. Robert Flick, our
project's Independent Evaluator, who initially made the contact for the
presentation on our behalf more than a month ago. The following link
will take you to a streaming audio file of this presentation

Florida
Humanities Council Radio Report - The Prometheus Project - Ten years
ago, a New York writer and social critic designed what he thought was a
step toward correcting some of the inequality in American society: giving
poor people the tools to "reconnect" to public life through education in
the Fine Arts and Humanities. The results of programs in cities around the
country
have been encouraging, and now these ideas are being tried out in Central
Florida, as Bill Dudley
reports. (Scroll down the page to Cut 4 and click on the image to play

Norton, 1997] and Jay Larry Brown, Head of Tufts University Center
on Hunger, Poverty, and Nutrition Policy, Former Head of
Harvard University's School of Public Health, Former Assistant
Surgeon General, There are 40 to 80 million people living in poverty
in the United States - and no clear solution on how to get them out
of it. Cultural critic Earl Shorris believes
impoverished people need skills in dialogue and negotiation to get
them out from under; skills they could learn through lessons in the
humanities. But critics say getting a job is most important. Join
Ray Suarez for a look at the debate over getting people out of
poverty.

Tanya Ott reports from Orlando,
Fla., that city officials have passed tough ordinances cracking
down on the homeless. It's now illegal for the homeless to sit
or lie down in public on a park bench. Downtown merchants had
complained that large numbers of homeless people were scaring
away customers and hurting their businesses. Homeless advocates
say it's part of a national mood to criminalize homelessness.
