University Parallel Program: Associate in Arts Degree
Pre-Majors
pages 65-104 of the 2001-2002 Catalog

Back to Table of Contents

The Associate in Arts (A. A.) Degree is designed for the student
who plans to transfer to a Florida public university as a junior to
complete a bachelor's degree. Through the A. A. Degree, Valencia
offers lower division preparation for almost all of the
approximately 200 majors in the State University System of
Florida. The A. A. Degree provides the courses of study
equivalent to those offered in the freshman and sophomore years
(lower division) of Florida's state universities; a student who
earns an A. A. Degree from Valencia meets the lower division
general education requirements of a Florida state university but
does not automatically meet the requirements for a particular
major.

The A. A. Degree requirements consist of general education
requirements and electives in preparation for a specific
bachelor's degree. Many majors at the universities require that
specific courses be taken as part of the A. A. Degree, both within
general education and within the electives. Florida's state
universities have identified common prerequisites to be taken
during the lower division by all students who plan to enter a
particular major within the university system. These
requirements may be met by completing an A. A. Pre-Major at
Valencia or by careful selection of courses for the Associate in
Arts: General Studies. Transfer manuals, catalogs and/ or web
sites of the state universities list the courses, including the
common prerequisites, that are to be taken at the community
college in order to enter the junior year in a particular major at
the university.

Valencia's Pre-Majors are designed for a student who plans to
earn the Associate in Arts Degree and transfer to one of the ten
state universities in Florida as a junior to complete a bachelor's
degree in one of the specific majors. Each Pre-Major includes
the courses to satisfy Valencia's General Education requirements
for the A. A. Degree and the Statewide Common Course
Prerequisites for the specific major (which count as the elective
credits for the A. A. Degree). The Pre-Majors are included at the
end of this section of the catalog.

The Associate in Arts Degree: General Studies is available for
students who want a two-year college degree and have not
selected a Pre-Major for transfer to a state university in Florida
and for students who plan to transfer to a private and/ or out-of-state
institution. Although the Pre-Majors provide the best
preparation for transfer to specific majors in Florida's State
University System, a student still may choose the Associate in
Arts: General Studies for a variety of reasons.

The Associate in Arts degree requires a minimum of 60 college-level
credit hours including 36 hours in general education and 24
hours of electives.

If you plan to transfer to a Florida state university, it is very
important that you take the courses in your freshman and
sophomore years that are required for admission to your major
at the university. You may visit an Advising and Counseling
Center or a Career Center to review the transfer manuals or
catalogs and to obtain copies of the pages for the majors in
which you are interested. Of course, you may meet with a staff
member in an Advising and Counseling Center who will discuss
with you the requirements for a particular major( s) and an
academic plan to prepare you for that major( s).

It may be helpful to understand the typical organization of
academic programs at a university. A university is composed of
several colleges; each college contains several academic
departments; each department includes various academic
majors. The A. A. Degree guarantees admission to a state
university but not necessarily admission to a specific major
(program). Certain majors are designated as "restricted access"
or "limited access" programs meaning that they have admission
requirements in addition to earning the A. A. Degree. These
requirements may include: completion of specific courses, a
minimum grade point average in specific courses, a minimum
grade point average in all course work, an interview, a minimum
number of hours of related volunteer work, an audition,
submission of a portfolio, and/ or deadlines. Requirements such
as these are given in the state university transfer manuals,
catalogs and web sites. It is very important to find out if the
major( s) in which you are interested is either "restricted access"
or "limited access" and, if so, the exact requirements in addition
to the A. A. Degree.

Although the A. A. Degree does not guarantee admission to a
private and/ or out-of-state institution, you can find out what the
lower division requirements are for the institution and include
all, or as many as possible, of the requirements in your A. A.
Degree. To find out what the requirements are, you may visit a
Career Center for assistance, visit the institution's Web site or
contact the institution directly. Although Valencia staff members
cannot speak on behalf of other institutions, once you know the
requirements, a member of the Advising and Counseling Center
staff will assist you in developing an academic plan for your
A. A. Degree.

In order to have a smooth academic transfer, it is very important
that you take the initiative to know all of the requirements for
your major at the institution to which you plan to transfer.

policies of the District Board of Trustees. You may follow the
graduation requirements from any one catalog within the five-year
period; however, once your governing catalog has expired,
your graduation requirements will be based on the requirements
in the current catalog.

You will not receive grade forgiveness for any college credit
course (including college-preparatory courses) repeated after you
have been awarded a degree from Valencia if the course initially
was taken prior to the awarding of the degree.

B. Electives/ Required Prerequisites
for Major 24 Credits

Most college-level credit courses taught at Valencia will count
toward elective credit. Any credit hours in excess of the
minimum required in any of the five core areas listed above will
count as elective credits. University majors require certain
prerequisite courses before transferring; these are the courses
that should be taken as electives at Valencia.

Check with an advisor/ counselor to select the best electives.

C. Foreign Language Proficiency Requirement
Valencia's college-level foreign language proficiency requirement
can be satisfied in one of the ways listed below. Satisfaction of
this graduation requirement for Valencia also satisfies the foreign
language admission requirement for Florida public universities;
it may or may not satisfy a specific university graduation
requirement. Students are encouraged to find out the specific
requirements of institutions in which they are interested.

° Completion of two credits (two years) of sequential high
school instruction in one foreign language with a passing
grade each year or

° Successful completion of nine semester hours of college credit
in one foreign language or

° For students with foreign language knowledge, successful
completion of the last course in the nine-hour language
sequence (for example, passing FRE 1101, GER 1101, POR
1101 or SPN 1101) or

° Demonstration of proficiency by passing a CLEP (College
Level Examination Program) foreign language test or a
foreign language proficiency test administered by the
University of Central Florida.

Students whose native language is a language other than English
may be eligible for an exemption by demonstration of foreign
language proficiency through course work on a high school transcript
from a non-English speaking country and completion of Area I of the
Associate in Arts Degree general education requirements.

Students who earn college-level foreign language credits through
course work or CLEP may apply these credits toward the 24
hours of electives.

Successful completion of one of the following nine-hour foreign
language sequences satisfies the foreign language proficiency
requirement at Valencia:

FRE 1000 Basic French (3 cr)
FRE 1100 Elementary French I (3 cr)
FRE 1101 Elementary French II (3 cr)
OR
GER 1000 Basic German (3 cr)
GER 1100 Elementary German I (3 cr)
GER 1101 Elementary German II (3 cr)

POR 1101 Elementary Portuguese II (3 cr)
OR
SPN 1000 Basic Spanish (3 cr)
SPN 1100 Elementary Spanish I (3 cr)
SPN 1101 Elementary Spanish II (3 cr)

Demonstrated college-level proficiency in American Sign
Language (either through completion of nine semester hours or
successful completion of SPA 2614) can be used to fulfill this
requirement at Valencia.

NOTE: American Sign Language cannot be used to fulfill the
foreign language graduation requirement at many universities.
Students are responsible for verifying acceptability at the
institution to which they plan to transfer.

SPA 2612 American Sign Language I (3 cr)
SPA 2613 American Sign Language II (3 cr)
SPA 2614 American Sign Language III (4 cr)

Honors Program
A major emphasis of Valencia Community College's Honors
Program is to teach students to think critically and in so doing
awaken them to a new world of opportunities for personal and
intellectual growth.

Honors classes are not just regular classes with additional work;
they are an entirely unique intellectual experience. Emphasis on
individual, original and participative learning is key. In
addition, classes are kept small. (Average size is 15 students.)
Students in honors courses study and evaluate primary source
materials rather than relying solely on textbooks. The classes
help students develop and sharpen their research skills. In
honors classes, students learn to fashion original interpretations
and analyses of course materials.

While students have some flexibility in designing their Honors
Program to meet individual needs, there are two basic options
that lead to an Honors Degree: the course-based Honors
Program and the Honors Interdisciplinary Studies Program.
Students may select either option or they can combine course
work from both options to receive an Honors Degree.
The course-based Honors program offers courses ranging from
Mythology to Calculus. Courses range from three to five credit
hours each.

The Honors Interdisciplinary Studies Program (IDH option)
gives students a strong liberal arts background. IDH classes
encourage the full expression of ideas. Instead of studying one
topic during the entire class period, students explore a range of
topics related to a particular subject.

To earn an Honors Degree through the Honors IDH Program or
the course-based Honors Program, students need to take at least
24 credit hours of their degree requirements in either Honors or
IDH courses and maintain an overall GPA of 3.5 or better.
Honors Certificates are given to students who complete 12 or
more credit hours in either Honors or IDH course work and
maintain a minimum overall GPA of at least 3.25. Honors
degrees and certificates must be completed within a maximum of
80 credit hours.

In addition to a challenging classroom environment, the Honors
Program offers a wide variety of opportunities for experiential
learning. Extending instruction beyond the classroom helps
students better understand the world they are studying. Taking
field trips, seeing plays, attending concerts, meeting famous
authors and participating in leadership retreats are all part of the
honors experience. Several times each year the Honors Program
also brings in nationally and internationally acclaimed speakers
to discuss politics, science and the arts. In addition, the Honors
Program sponsors an international trip during spring break each
year.

To qualify for Valencia's Honors Program, including the Honors
Interdisciplinary Studies Program option, you must meet one of
the following entrance requirements:

° Be in the top 10 percent of your high school graduating class.
° Have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.5 or higher on a four
point scale or 4.3 or higher on a five point scale.

° Have a Computerized Placement Test score (CPT) of 100 or
above in Sentence Skills (W), 97 or above on Reading Skills
(R), and 72 or above on Elementary Algebra (A) or have 83 or
above on Sentence Skills (W), 83 or above on Reading Skills
(R), and 90 or above on Elementary Algebra (A) plus 50 or
above on College Level Math (I).

° Have an Enhanced ACT composite score of 26 or higher or a
combined score on the SAT-I of 1170 or higher.

° Have a cumulative Valencia GPA of 3.25 with a minimum of
12 credit hours of college-level course work.

Honors Program scholarships are available based on academic
ability.

Honors Interdisciplinary Studies Program
As one option in the Honors Program, you may enter the Honors
Interdisciplinary Studies Program on West Campus. Through
this program you can complete 24 of the 36 hours required in
general education and qualify for an Honors Degree; the Honors
Interdisciplinary Studies Program (IDH) covers all of the general
education requirements in English composition, humanities and
science (non-laboratory courses) and one of the two courses
required in social science. (For the remaining requirements, see
the A. A. Degree requirements elsewhere in this section.)

Through this program students learn about the intellectual
progress mankind has made from ancient times to the present, as
well as learning about and formulating projections for the future.
Content in the program ranges from Plato to Einstein, from
Shakespeare to Sarte, and has been carefully selected so that
students receive a wide range of information and yet study a
number of topics in depth.

Valencia's Interdisciplinary Studies Program has been recognized
by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Center
for the Study of Community Colleges as one of the best general
education programs in the country.

The IDH program consists of four six-credit-hour courses taught
during Sessions 1 and 2. These courses provide an excellent
foundation for further college study. Many graduates of the
program go on to advanced study at some of the nation's finest
colleges and universities. The IDH courses are:

IDH 1110 Interdisciplinary Studies in General Education I
Freshman Composition I (Gordon Rule Writing)
Humanities

IDH 1111 Interdisciplinary Studies in General Education II
Freshman Composition II (Gordon Rule Writing)
Natural Science

IDH 2120 Interdisciplinary Studies in General Education III
Humanities (Gordon Rule Writing)
Social Science

IDH 2121 Interdisciplinary Studies in General Education IV
Humanities (Gordon Rule Writing)
Natural Science

Enrollment in the IDH courses is open to students who qualify
for admission into Valencia's Honors Program.

The Gordon Rule
State Board of Education Rule 6A-10.030, the Gordon Rule,
requires that students complete with grades of C or better 12
credit hours in designated courses that involve substantial
writing (a total of 24,000 words) and six credit hours of
mathematics course work at the level of college algebra or
higher. These courses must be completed successfully (grades of
C or better) prior to the receipt of an A. A. Degree and prior to
entry into the upper division of a Florida public university.

For graduation with the Associate in Arts Degree from Valencia,
the Gordon Rule requirements can be satisfied by completing
either the Writing and Mathematics requirements listed below or
the Interdisciplinary Studies Program and the Mathematics
requirement.

College-Level Academic Skills Program
(CLASP) and Test (CLAST)

Florida Statutes and rules of the State Board of Education require
students in the following categories to demonstrate proficiency
in communication and computation:

1. Those seeking the Associate in Arts Degree. (CLAST is not
required to receive the Associate in Science Degree.)
2. Those who will transfer to a state university with 60 or more
hours.

The CLAST test is a method to demonstrate competency.
Alternative means to meet the requirement have been approved
for those students who meet specific guidelines.

To be eligible for CLAST, students must have completed
successfully a minimum of 18 hours of college-level work
including Freshman Composition I and II, or their equivalent,
and a math course from the list of AREA 3 Math courses under
General Education Requirements. For successful completion,
these English and Math courses require a minimum grade of C.

Alternative ways to meet College-Level Academic Skills Test
requirements are available. Students may qualify for an
Alternative based on grades in a minimum of 6 credits in specific
courses. To qualify for the Alternative to the CLAST subtests in
English Language Skills, Essay, and Reading, a student must
have a 2.5 GPA in ENC 1101 and ENC 1102 or their equivalent.
To qualify for the Alternative to the CLAST subtest in
mathematics, a student must have a 2.5 GPA in two courses that
apply toward the mathematics requirement for general education
in the A. A. Degree at Valencia Community College.

A second alternative method requires specific scores on the SAT-I
or Enhanced ACT or equivalents on their original scales:

Enhanced Section( s)
SAT-I Score
or ACT Score Exempted
Verbal 500 English 21 English and Essay

Verbal 500 Reading 22 Reading
Mathematics 500 Mathematics 21 Mathematics

It is possible to satisfy the CLASP requirements through a
combination of passing one or more CLAST subtests and using
the Alternative( s) for one or more subtests.

Visit an Advising and Counseling Center to register for the
CLAST or process the paperwork for the Alternatives. There is a
$25 CLAST examination fee per CLAST registration period, and
there is a registration deadline. See the College Calendar in the
front of this catalog for the registration deadlines and test dates.

The Computer Adapted Test -College Level Academic Skills Test
(CAT-CLAST) is given frequently and is available to those
students who need only the computation, reading and/ or
English language skills subtests of the CLAST. To register for the
CAT-CLAST, visit the Assessment Center on East or West Campus.

To assist students in preparing for the CLAST, Valencia teaches
CLASP skills in computation, English language, essay, and
reading in courses in each of those academic disciplines. The
skills are reinforced in virtually all appropriate courses offered at
Valencia and immediately before each CLAST sitting through
CLAST review sessions in all four areas. Students can obtain
additional support to strengthen CLASP skills through the
English, mathematics, and reading labs. The campus Learning
Resources Centers (LRCs) and the Technology Resource Center
(TRC) at the Winter Park Campus have preparation materials.
Videos for each academic discipline may be viewed in the
LRCs/ TRC, and books are available that provide sample
questions and preparation techniques. In addition, special help
is provided through the West Campus Writing Center.

Community College Associate in Arts
Transfer Guarantees

Community College Associate in Arts graduates are guaranteed
certain rights under the statewide Articulation Agreement 6A-10.024.
This Articulation Agreement governs the transfer of
students from Florida public community colleges to the state
university system. The agreement addresses General Admission
to a state university and Program Admission.

General Admission to Florida State Universities
Guarantees
The Florida Articulation Agreement designates the Associate in
Arts degree as the transfer degree to Florida State Universities.
In doing so, the Agreement guarantees that:

1. Community college A. A. Degree holders will be granted
admission to one of ten (10) universities but not necessarily to
limited access programs.

2. Upon transferring to a state university, A. A. Degree graduates
will be awarded at least 60 credit hours towards the
baccalaureate degree.

3. The university catalog in effect the year the A. A. Degree
student first enrolled at the community college will remain in
effect for the student's program, provided the student
maintains continuous enrollment as defined in that catalog.

4. Once a student has completed the General Education Core
and this is so noted on the transcript, regardless of whether or
not an A. A. Degree is awarded, no other state university or
community college to which the student may transfer can
require additional courses to the General Education Core.

5. When transferring among institutions participating in the
statewide course numbering system, a receiving institution
must accept all courses taken at the transfer institution, if the
same course with the same course number is offered at the
receiving institution.

6. Credits earned through acceleration mechanisms (CLEP, AP,
PEP, early enrollment, International Baccalaureate, and dual
enrollment courses) within the A. A. Degree at the community
college will be transferable to the state university.

Students without an A. A. Degree who are seeking admission to a
state university do not have all the guarantees provided by the
Articulation Agreement and may be denied admission or lose
credit when transferring. In most cases students without an A. A.
Degree will have to meet freshman admissions standards.

Admission to Specific Programs at Florida State
Universities

The universities determine the courses and prerequisites that
must be taken in order to receive a baccalaureate degree for a
chosen program. Although all credit earned towards an A. A.
Degree will transfer to a university, not all credit may satisfy the
program prerequisites or the course requirements for a
baccalaureate degree. Therefore, it is important to know the
program requirements and to take as many courses as possible at
Valencia while completing the A. A. Degree.

Limited Access
Due to limited resources, some programs have limited
enrollments; in order to select students these programs may have
additional admission requirements which are more restrictive
than the university's general admission requirements. These
requirements include one or more of the following: completion
of specific courses, grade point average, an interview, test scores,
auditions, and submission of a portfolio and deadlines.

Guarantees
A. A. graduates are not guaranteed admission into limited access
programs but are guaranteed that:

1. The community college student will have the same
opportunity to enroll in a university limited access program
as the native university student.

2. Selection and enrollment criteria for a university limited
access program will be established and published in catalogs
and appropriate publications. Notification of any changes in
a program will include sufficient time for prospective
students to adjust to meet program criteria.

Resources are available for planning your transfer to a bachelor's
degree program. Counselors and advisors are available through
the Advising and Counseling Centers on each campus at
Valencia to help you plan your individual transfer program.

Appeals
Should any of these guarantees be denied, the student has the
right to file an appeal. Each state university has established
appeal procedures. Students may contact the state university
articulation officer for information about these procedures.

Associate in Arts Degree: General Studies
The Associate in Arts Degree: General Studies (A. A.: General
Studies) is available for students who want a two-year college degree
and have not selected a Pre-Major for transfer to a state university in
Florida and for students who plan to transfer to a private and/ or
out-of-state institution. Although the Pre-Majors provide the best
preparation for transfer to the specific majors in Florida's State
University System, a student still may choose the Associate in Arts:
General Studies for a variety of reasons.

By completing the Associate in Arts Degree: General Studies, a
student satisfies the General Education requirements for Valencia
and the state universities and, therefore, is eligible for transfer as a
junior to a state university; in addition, with careful course
selection, a student who earns this degree may be prepared for
transfer as a junior to a specific degree program. It is the student's
responsibility to find out the requirements for admission to the
major at the university to which the student will transfer. Such
information is available through Valencia's Advising and
Counseling or Career Centers and university web sites.

All degree-seeking students must complete all required college-preparatory
courses, prerequisites for the program courses and
Valencia's foreign language proficiency requirement. Courses
meeting the preceding requirements may be in addition to the 60
credit hours listed.

Pre-Majors at Valencia
Through the Associate in Arts Degree, Valencia offers preparation
for the nearly 200 majors in the State University System (SUS) of
Florida. The Pre-Majors are designed for a student who plans to
earn the Associate in Arts Degree from Valencia and transfer to
one of the ten state universities in Florida as a junior to complete
a bachelor's degree in one of the specific majors. Each Pre-Major
includes the courses to satisfy Valencia's General Education
requirements for the A. A. Degree and the Statewide Common
Course Prerequisites for the specific major (which count as the
elective credits for the A. A. Degree).

Students who plan to transfer to a restricted access or limited
access program are responsible for completing the specific
requirements of the institution to which they will transfer, as
completion of a Pre-Major does not guarantee admission to an
upper division program if that program has restricted access or
limited access status. In general, restricted access means there
are admission requirements in addition to the A. A. Degree and,
if those requirements are met, the student will qualify for
admission to the program. The additional requirements might
include the completion of certain courses, a separate application,
an early application date and/ or a minimum grade point
average. Limited access means there are requirements in
addition to the A. A. Degree and, even though these additional
requirements are met, the student might not be admitted to the
program because admission is a selective process conducted by
the university. The additional requirements might include the
completion of certain courses, a minimum grade point average,
minimum test scores, auditions and/ or portfolios. It is the
student's responsibility to learn if a particular major is
designated limited access or restricted access at the specific
university to which the student wants to transfer.

Some Pre-Majors are based upon articulation agreements with
specific universities and this information is reflected in the
specific Pre-Major information. Although a Pre-Major may be
based upon an articulation agreement with one or more
universities, the listed courses would be very similar for that
major for any of the state universities in Florida.

+ This course must be completed with a grade of C or better.
