ENC-1101
College-preparatory courses help students
attain basic skills in reading, writing, and
mathematics so that they have a better
chance at success in college-level courses.
Valencia offers college-preparatory
courses in reading, English, mathematics
and English as a second language.
College-preparatory courses do not apply
toward an associate degree.

For course level placement, each of the
three skill areas of reading, English and
mathematics are independent of each
other. Through entry assessment you
may place at the college level in one or
more areas and at the college-preparatory
level in the other area( s). If your skills are
below levels defined by the Florida
Department of Education as required for
successful performance in a college-credit
program, Valencia will help you schedule
your college-preparatory courses and any
other instruction for which you are
adequately prepared.

Requirements for
Completing College-Preparatory
Courses

If you are a degree-seeking student and
you place in one or more college-prepara-tory
courses, you will be required to
enroll in the course or courses at the
beginning of your enrollment and contin-ue
to enroll in them each session until you
have completed your required college-preparatory
courses. You must comply
with the rules for completing required
college-preparatory courses as described
in this section.

All exit-level college-preparatory courses
(ENC 0012, MAT 0020C, MAT 0024C and
REA 0002) have a state-mandated compe-tency
test. You must pass the competency
test to pass the course.

If you are a non-degree-seeking student
(enrolled in a Technical Certificate
program, as a transient student, for
teacher recertification, for job
improvement or with no intent for a
Valencia degree), you are not required to
take a college-preparatory course( s)
unless needed as a prerequisite( s) for a
specific course. If you enroll in an
Applied Technology Diploma or a
Vocational Credit Certificate Program, you
may be required to take college-preparatory
courses.

Reading (REA), English (ENC) and
Mathematics (MAT) Courses

If you have a college-preparatory
requirement in reading, you must enroll
in that reading course in your first session
of enrollment.

Once you begin a college-preparatory
course in reading, English, or
mathematics, you must continue to enroll
in that discipline (reading, English, or
mathematics) each session until you have
satisfied your college-preparatory
requirements in that discipline.

Requirement in One Area
If you have a requirement in one college-preparatory
area (reading, English or
mathematics), you must enroll in your
required course.

Requirements in Two Areas
Each session you have requirements in
college-preparatory courses in two of the
three areas (reading, English,
mathematics), you must enroll in at least
one college-preparatory course. If you
have a requirement in reading, you must
enroll in that reading course.

Requirements in Three Areas
Each session you have requirements in
college-preparatory courses in three areas
(reading, English, and mathematics), you
must enroll in at least two of the three
areas, and one of your courses must be
reading. If you are taking only one
course, it must be reading.

English as a Second Language
(EAP) Courses

If you are required to take English as a
Second Language for Academic Purposes
(EAP) courses, you will be required to
enroll in your EAP courses when you
begin at Valencia and continue to enroll in
them each session until you have
completed your EAP course requirements.
Your EAP course requirements will be
based on your entry assessment and your
progress in the EAP courses.

Requirements for
Passing All College-Preparatory
Courses

Each college-preparatory course must be
completed with a grade of C or better to
advance to the next level of course work.

Both successful completion of all course
requirements and passing scores on a
standardized competency exam are
required to complete the college-preparatory
sequence in each discipline
area. If you do not pass the competency
exam for a college-preparatory course,
you must re-enroll in the same course.

Limitation on Attempts in
Same College-Preparatory
Course

State Rule permits only three attempts at
Valencia to pass the same college-preparatory
course with a grade of C or
better. The same course, usually, means
the course number is the same when
posted on a Valencia transcript. For
example, you have only three attempts to
pass REA 0001 College-Preparatory
Reading I with a grade of C or better.

Being enrolled in a college-preparatory
course beyond the Withdrawal Deadline
counts as an attempt. The Withdrawal
Deadline is established by Valencia and
listed in the College Calendar.

If you are unsuccessful in three attempts
in the same college-preparatory course:

1. You will not be permitted to register
for a fourth attempt in the same
course, but, after seeing a counselor,
you will be permitted to register for
another course( s) for which you are
eligible;

2. You will be advised to contact public
and/ or private providers of college-preparatory
instruction to gain the
required skills; and

3. After you have gained the required
skills, you will be required to take the
appropriate entry assessment and
score out of the course in which you
have been unsuccessful.

Permission to register for a fourth or
subsequent attempt, based on major
extenuating circumstances, may be
requested through an academic appeals
process. The appeal must be processed by
the Fourth Attempt Deadline established
by Valencia and listed in the College
Calendar in the front of this catalog.
Grades from fourth and subsequent
attempts will forgive grades from
previous attempts.

Further information about this appeal
process is available in the Advising and
Counseling Center on each campus.
