Annual Report of the College Learning Council
Valencia’s Learning Council focuses on the core learning processes
at the college. Comprised of broad representation from administrative,
faculty and student services constituencies, the council examines
issues relating to enrollment, curriculum, assessment, learning
technology and support systems. Council meetings highlight specific
topics for discussion and are now available through the college’s
Tandberg Media System. Topics this year have included Achieving
the Dream, Valencia’s learning-related grant; the college’s
lab and support centers; and the new alternative delivery standards
plan. Committees that report to the Learning Council are involved
with credentialing, the Honors program, professional development,
and support for the learning mission of the college. Agendas and
minutes for the Learning Council are available through Valencia’s
Web site at http://www.valenciacc.edu/learningcouncil/.
Substantive issues guided by Learning Council leadership during
the 2005-2006 fiscal year include the following:
• The council approved a request by Julie Phelps, Achieving
the Dream project director, to make the College Learning Council
the core team for the grant project. The purpose of the request
was to streamline feedback between the project and the college community.
The Learning Council serves in an advisory role to the AtD coordinating
team by offering a forum for collegewide communications and providing
an opportunity for focused inquiry on the progress of the project.
Reports from Achieving the Dream are a standing monthly item which
will be documented in the minutes and available on the Learning
Council Web site.
• The Learning Council endorsed a work plan for academic policy
cluster review. The plan, proposed by Faculty Council President
Amy Bosley, will have small work teams review current policies and,
in broad collaboration with all constituencies at the college, recommend
substantive change for future adoption.
• The Learning Council approved changes to its structure to
encourage broader inclusion and more focused discussion of learning
issues at the college. Meetings, held at the downtown center, are
now available through the Tandberg Media System on all campuses.
The format of the meetings has been adjusted to allow for substantive
topic discussions by the addition of a consent agenda for regular
monthly items. The membership of the council now includes four faculty
members, as well as Bill White, chief information officer.
The Learning Council recommended collegewide adoption of the alternative
delivery standards plan. The plan has been under development at
the college for over a year. It is based on standards of best practice,
extensively researched by the work team and supported by faculty
and the Office of Information Technology. Included in the plan are
principles of good practice, policies and procedures, and guidelines
for a faculty development certificate program. The plan is available
on the Valencia Web site at http://www.valenciacc.edu/ltad/.

How Full is Your Bucket? - How did you feel after your last
interaction with another person? Did that person, your spouse, best
friend, coworker, or even a stranger, “fill your bucket”
by making you feel more positive? Or did that person “dip
from your bucket,” leaving you feeling more negative than
before? How Full Is Your Bucket reveals how even the briefest interactions
affect your relationships, productivity, health, and longevity.
Organized around a simple metaphor of a dipper and a bucket and
ground in 50 years of research, this workshop will show you how
to greatly increase the positive moments in your work and your life,
while reducing the negative. Thursday, July 27, 2-4:30 p.m., East

of active listening, stewardship, community building, celebrating
diversity, and dealing with obstacles. (3 openings) Tuesday, August

the 1980's. Their unique Florida story is one of African Americans
who carved out unique economic opportunities despite the social
conditions of the “Jim Crow South.” Tuesday, August

Procurement News
There are important changes in collegewide stationery and copy center
procedures that went into effect July 1. The cost of paper, like
everything else, has been increasing in price over the past several
years. A noticeable change was seen on the last copy paper bid that
is conducted every six months for competitive pricing. In addition
to higher paper costs, freight charges have been added to several
commodities because of gas prices, increasing the total shipment
costs by as much as 10%.
Because of escalating paper and additional freight costs, as well
as copier charges and overages, it is necessary to defray some of
these costs collegewide. Although the slight increase in costs to
the departments will not cover the rising expenses, it will help
sustain and provide continued collegewide copier maintenance and
copier refresh programs.
NCR paper, formerly ordered through the Printing Services Web site
on the collegewide stationery order form, will now be available
through the copy centers at a departmental charge of $4 per ream.
This includes 2, 3, 4 & 5 part forms.
NCS & Scantron answer sheet forms can also be purchased at the
copy centers for a minimal charge of 2 cents per sheet. Packets
are sold in 10 or 500 (ream) increments.
Because additional charges will be accessed to departments, the
cost for reams of paper will be decreased by $1 per ream.
Note: NCR paper is NOT needed for Travel Authorizations, Certificates
of Absence or General Requisitions.
The following will be charged to department budgets under the general
ledger code 620040:
• One-sided black and white copies - $0.02 each
• Two-sided black and white copies - $0.035 each
• NCR paper; 2, 3, 4, 5 part - $4 per ream
• 20# color paper - $3 per ream
• 24#-60# paper - $4 per ream
• Ledger size paper (11x17) - $4 per ream
• 65#-90# paper (cardstock) - $7 per ream
• Student Evaluation Forms – 1 cent each
• NCS/Scantron Answer Sheets – 2 cents each
• Binding Services – 40 cents per binder for comb, vello
or cloth
Color copying now available! Color copiers have been added to the
East, West and Osceola Copy Centers. The cost for color prints is
29 cents each.
