pdfCall ext. 3150 or visit www.valencia.org/ taste today to get your tickets. And don’t forget about your corks if you can’t attend. There is still an opportunity for you to help – recycle your corks and upcycle our efforts through the Save the Corks! campaign. Now through the end of December, you are welcome to send your recycled corks to Valencia Foundation (DTC-1) or take your corks to Save the Corks! containers at participating ABC Fine Wine and Spirits locations. Through a partnership with Nomacorc and Terracycle, ABC Fine Wine and Spirits will donate $.02 to A Taste for Learning for each cork recycled. And for those attending, be sure to bring your corks the night of the event and visit Cork Island – see you there!

Holiday Hiring Guidelines from Human Resources

Due to the large number of holidays during the months of November and December, we do not normally have new employees begin work during this period. New employees should begin work on or before November 9, 2009. After that date, recruitment activities may be conducted through the Human Resources department and offers of employment may be extended, however, newly hired employees may not begin work until January 4, 2010.

Valencia Student to be Featured on CNN Special, “Latino in America”

Valencia Community College student Carlos Robles will be featured in the documentary, “Latino in America,” which will debut Oct. 21 and 22 on CNN and CNN en Español. Robles’ story will air on the 22nd.

The two-night, four-hour documentary, hosted by correspondent Soledad O’Brien, examines the growing diversity of America, exploring Latino-American culture through personal stories. Several U.S. communities, including the Puerto Rican community in Orlando, are featured.

Robles, who was a police officer in Puerto Rico, aims to become a sheriff with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. However, he is worried that his struggles with English may keep him from his dream. To work on his language skills, he is enrolled in Conversational English courses through the Center for Global Languages at Valencia Enterprises, the continuing education division of Valencia Community College. CNN followed his progress for eight weeks, documenting his class work and gaining insight into his life in Orlando.

Students from Puerto Rico make up nearly 10 percent of the Conversational English courses at the Center for Global Languages.

Valencia’s service to the Hispanic community is also noteworthy in the following ways:

  • Hispanics account for almost 27 percent of the 50,000 degree-seeking students at Valencia.
  • Because enrollment exceeds 25 percent Hispanic, with at least half coming from lower-income families, Valencia is a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution.
  • Valencia ranks 3rd among the nation’s two-year institutions for the number of associate
  • degrees awarded to Hispanics (up from 5th in 2008).

For more information, visit www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2009/latino.in.america.

News from Procurement

Procurement Cardholders/Coordinators - For a helpful PCard information, look no further than the “links” section of the PaymentNet welcome screen. From here you have access to the PCard manual, the Valencia tax exemption certificate, a PaymentNet cheat sheet, and JPMorgan Chase’s learning website!

pdf

Account Codes - A list of account codes (General Ledger codes) and descriptions for what they should be used for can be found on the Procurement web-site - http://www. valenciacc.edu/procurement/facultystaff_FAQs.cfm. Look for FAQ “What account do I use”. Download this file for easy access.

PCard FAQ - Question: What is my current available limit?  Answer:  Your PCard’s current available limit may be checked in several ways. You can contact the JPMorgan Chase customer service number on the back of your card (best and most accurate method), or you can run PaymentNet’s “cardholder status” or “available balance by low available limit” report (keep in mind that these reports are one day behind). The steps for running these and other PaymentNet reports can be found at the back of your PCard manual.

Internal PCard Audits - The Procurement Office is in the process of conducting its first college wide internal audit on all credit card holders/approvers for the fiscal year 0809. Kacy Weekes or Mary Ellen Davies will be contacting you for a convenient time to review your receipts and PCard practices. Audits will be done at the cardholder’s desk or approver’s desk. E-mails will be sent with additional information.

Outlook Tip-of-the-Week: Even more Unified Messaging

With the voice mail system now an integral part of the MS Exchange server, accessible via Outlook you have even more control voice mail management. Also, since many have asked; the format for Voice Mail files is .WMA, Windows Media format. The process to create them uses a CODEC (COder – DECoder) that makes them smaller in size (smaller than MP3) so they will not take up a lot of space in the e-mail system.

Here are a few of the major items:

  • Voice Mail Password reset:
    • In Outlook:
      • Go to Tools > Options
      • Click on the Voice Mail Tab
      • Click the Reset Pin button – generates a new temporary PIN
    • In Outlook Web Access (webmail.valenciacc.edu)
THIS OPTION IS ONLY AVAILABLE IN INTERNET EXPLORER
      • Click on Options
      • On the left side of the window select Voice Mail
      • Click Reset Voice Mail PIN - generates a new temporary PIN
  • Creating a voice mail greeting
    • Unified uses only two voice mail messages:
      • Primary greeting that all callers hear
      • Out-of-Office greeting heard when you have set your voice mail to play it
    • Recording and switching between the records
      • Recording the greetings is done after logging into the voice mail system using a touchtone telephone. (to activate touchtone  features Press 0)
      • Turning on/off the Out-of-Office greeting using Outlook
        • Go to Tools > Options
        • Click on the Voice Mail Tab
        • Select Out of office mail greeting (by default the Voice mail greeting is on)
      • Turning on/off the Out-of-Office greeting using a touchtone telephone (to activate touchtone features Press 0)
        • Access the voice mail as normal
        • Say Personal Options or press 6
        • Press 1 and follow prompts

CAUTION:  DO NOT SHARE YOUR VOICE MAIL PIN WITH ANYONE. DOING SO GIVES ACCESS TO YOUR E-MAIL.

The Unified Messaging guide is available in the FAQ’s at: http://answers.valenciacc.edu/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=5572&task=knowledge&questionID=1315 or go to answers.valenciacc.edu - Keyword: Unified

Confused about symptoms of the common cold and the flu? The cold and the flu are both respiratory illnesses but they are caused by different types of viruses. Here are the symptoms of each at a glance:

  • COLD: Symptoms are generally less severe than flu symptoms. People with colds commonly experience a stuffy nose, sore throat, productive cough (producing mucus), slight tiredness and limited body aches. It is uncommon to have chills or headaches. May be bacterial in nature.
  • FLU: In general the flu is more severe than the common cold. Flu symptoms usually come on quickly (in 3-6 hours) and consist of fever, body aches, dry cough (not producing mucus) and extreme tiredness. It is common to have chills and headaches. The flu is viral in nature and routine antibiotics will not aide in the cure of the illness. Antiviral medications are needed and the use of antibiotics may actually cause more harm than good.
