Visions and Voices Presents

Barry Lopez, National Book Award winner and author of Arctic Dreams, will be reading at 1:15 p.m. on March 5 in the Osceola Campus Auditorium, Building 2, Room 201. Lopez is best known as the author of Arctic Dreams, for which he received the National Book Award. Among his other nonfiction books are About This Life, and Of Wolves and Men and several award-winning works of fiction, including Field Notes, Winter Count, and a novella-length fable, Crow and Weasel. His recent work includes Light Action in the Caribbean, a collection of stories, and Resistance (2004). He is the co-editor with Debra Gwartney of Home Ground: Language for an American Landscape, and he is currently working on a new book, tentatively titled Horizon.

Barry Lopez is a recipient of the Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the John Burroughs Medal, Guggenheim, Lannan and National Science Foundation Fellowships and the John Hay Medal. He is a regular contributor to Granta, The Paris Review, Orion, Manoa, Outside, The Georgia Review, Harper’s, and other periodicals. He has also just been named as one of four “contributing writers” to National Geographic.

Human Resources - Termination Reminder for Supervisors and Managers

Supervisors/Managers of part-time hourly and work study student employees, are reminded to notify Human Resources when an employee resigns, transfers to another department, or is dismissed and will no longer be working for the department or Supervisor/Manager. HR will need the last date worked for the specific position number that needs to be ended or terminated. Please contact Human Resources at 8033 to be directed to an HR Specialist for assistance.


Deadline Approaching for Submitting Orders for Commencement Academic Regalia

Commencement will be held on Saturday, May 9. The college is using Jostens again this year. Head sizes will no longer be needed because the caps are adjustable. Please contact Lisa Yenke for an order form if you have not received one in the mail. All orders must be submitted to Lisa Yenke at mail code DTC-4 prior to March 20.

Valencia will pay for the rental of your regalia if ordered by March 20. Payment for any orders received after March 20 will be the direct responsibility of the employee along with any surcharges for shipping. Regalia rates are: Associate-$20.70; Bachelor-$20.70; Master-$24.90; Doctor-$30.15 (all prices include gown, cap, tassel and hood).

You are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to order your regalia without charge. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Yenke at ext. 3401.

You will be notified via email when the academic regalia have been delivered to your campus Business Office.


Leadership Valencia

Banner 8 and Refresh Training - This Banner training session will cover some improved features that come with Release 8. We will also do some refresh training on select topics. Improved features include: Course Section Creation, Course Section Waitlist, Registration Min/Max Credits, and Atlas view of Financial Aid information. Refresh topics include: Creating a faculty member, Section creation for Dual Enrollment, and AR accounts, TSAAREV, TSASPAY, TSADETL. Choose from one of the following:

Podcaster's Lab - LTAD 3245 - This is an open lab for podcast creators to develop their work with the help of an instructional designer or multimedia specialist.  Prior attendance to LTAD 3241 and 3243 is strongly encouraged. March 6, 2-5 p.m., West Campus, Room 6-326A, Registration Code: TPL-1

Maximizing Your PowerPoint for WebCT - Maximize the potential of your PowerPoint presentations for more multimedia-rich online content. This hands-on workshop will cover topics including enhanced Office 2007 tools such as animations, SmartArt, and design options. Participants will add audio to their PowerPoint and convert it to a Flash file using iSpring, free downloadable software. The workshop will then discuss the Flash player and how to upload a Flash file onto a WebCT course. Institutional Review Board (IRB) Training – Part I - Planning to conduct a study involving Valencia students or employees? Not sure if your study needs to comply with Valencia's new mandatory Institutional Review Board (IRB) process for research projects? The Valencia IRB process is designed to encourage faculty, staff, and student research while protecting the participants, the college, and even the researcher. Part I will provide an overview of human research protection and how our IRB works with an aim to be as unintrusive as possible while complying with Federal regulations. Note: completion of this workshop satisfies the IRB training requirement for investigators of Valencia projects that have been approved through expedited or full review. Institutional Review Board (IRB) Training – Part II - Planning to conduct a research project that will require completing the application for Valencia's new Institutional Review Board (IRB) process? Part II will walk through the Valencia IRB application process through interactive discussions, including questions and discussion of examples. Recommended pre-requisite: IRB Training - Part I. Train-the-Trainer Creativity Camp - Once upon a time, trainers like us could hold our audiences at rapt attention with nothing more than a smooth delivery and a flip chart. To really impress them, we brought out the big guns - the colored markers. Today we know there are multiple ways to engage learners. If you have a desire to perhaps present a Leadership Valencia workshop, enhance your classroom presentation skills, or share your ideas and tips about training, then this workshop is for you. All those attending will receive a trainer's toolbox and an invaluable handbook full of great ideas and resources.
