CLAS - College Level Academic Skills

  • College Level Academic Skills (CLAS), created by the Florida State Board of Education, requires students to demonstrate proficiency in communication and computation prior to graduating.
  • College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) is no longer available after June 30, 2009.
  • Students aspiring to receive an A.A. degree or to transfer to a university with 60 or more credits, must meet CLAS requirements in order to graduate.
  • Students can use a combination of ACT, CPT, SAT I or 2.5 GPA in certain courses to meet the College Level Academic Skills (CLAS) requirement.
  • Students may register for the SAT I or ACT online. Click SAT I or ACT.

*Gordon Rule courses with the following prefixes: AML, CRW, ENC, ENG, ENL, & LIT. Students with a 2.5 GPA (6 credit hours minimum) in a combination of any of these courses will meet the exemption.

Students who do not meet the CLAS requirements listed above must move on to the next option until requirements are met. The following options MUST be completed in specified order:

  1. Any General Education, Gordon Rule Humanities class listed in Area 2.b. (page 102 of 09/10 Catalog).  If student earns grade of A or B in any of these courses, this course will be used with ENC 1101 as a waiver exemption (minimum of 6 credit hours). 
  2. Attempt the CPT after proof of review (materials can be found online at:   http://www.valenciacc.edu/assessments/cpt/cptprep.cfm).  Students will be allowed to attempt the CPT only 1 time per subtest for CLAS purposes.  Students will be charged the retake fee per subtest (if applicable). Students must score a 93 on Reading subtest and 105 Writing subtest to earn exemption.
  3. Apply for a waiver from CLAS Waiver Committee.  Waiver form is online in Atlas under Student Forms channel on Students Tab.  Waiver request is to be handed in to Assessment.

†Students with a 2.5 GPA in a combination of any two of these courses will meet the exemption:  MAC 1105 or any other MAC course with the last three digits being higher than 105, MGF 1106, MGF 1107, MGF 1113, MGF 1114, MGF 1118, MGF 1202 or any other MGF course with the last three digits being higher than 202, STA 1014 or higher.

Students who do not meet the CLAS requirements listed above must move on to the next option until requirements are met. The following options MUST be completed in specified order:

  1. Register for and complete with a grade of B or higher any other Gordon Rule mathematics course.
  2. Attempt the CPT after proof of review (materials can be found online at:   http://www.valenciacc.edu/assessments/cpt/cptprep.cfm).  Students will be allowed to attempt the CPT only 1 time per subtest for CLAS purposes.  Students will be charged the retake fee per subtest (if applicable). Students must score a 91 on Algebra subtest to earn exemption. 
  3. Apply for a waiver from CLAS Waiver Committee.  Waiver form is online in Atlas under Student Forms channel on Students Tab.  Waiver request is to be handed in to Assessment.
