Human Resources & Diversity HR Note - December 2008
What is a Senior Teaching Fellow and who qualifies for this designation?
Purpose:
The Senior Teaching Fellows Program is designed to help address the ongoing shortage of teaching faculty and to carry on a productive connection with veteran faculty who are making a significant lifestyle change in retirement, but can continue to contribute with a reduced work load.
Eligibility for Appointment:
Valencia retirees who have separated from the college for a minimum of one calendar month and have a minimum of 10 years of full-time teaching experience in a tenured or tenure track capacity at Valencia are eligible for appointment. The Dean must confirm eligibility and designate a returning retiree as having qualified for status as a Senior Teaching Fellow. The Dean then has the discretion to appoint the instructor on a term-by-term basis, governed by the needs of the academic department.
Expectations:
Senior Teaching Fellows will provide other services in addition to classroom teaching. These other services will be at a rate of two additional hours per week for every three classroom contact hours. These other services will include facilitating learning outside of the classroom, e.g., assistance in the laboratory, faculty mentoring, internship supervision, etc. These additional hours of service must be specifically identified and scheduled in writing.
Teaching Load:
The same guidelines used for regular adjunct faculty will apply to employees in this program.
Compensation:
Please refer to the adjunct faculty salary schedule for the appropriate academic year.
Procedures:
- Confirm the eligibility of a returning retiree for designation as a Senior Teaching Fellow.
- Complete a Recommendation-to-Hire form for Part-Time Employees, Form HR-18. Clearly designate the returning retiree as qualifying for Senior Teaching Fellows status.
- Unless the returning retiree is a current adjunct, he/she must complete a part-time adjunct hiring packet to be re-instated. Depending on the length of time since retirement, a background check may be required.
- Prepare an Electronic Personnel Action Form (EPAF) using the ST table and the appropriate grade associated with the Senior Teaching Fellows section of the adjunct salary schedule. Include reference to the required additional hours of other services in the comments section of the EPAF.
- Identify the additional hours of other services and schedule them in writing. The schedule should be maintained within the department and available for review if requested. Include reference to these hours in the comments section of the EPAF as indicated in #4 above.
