Federal Government Issues Revised I-9 Form

On November 7, 2007, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that a revised Employment Eligibility Verification Form (I-9) is now available.  Effective immediately, the I-9 form dated June 5, 2007 is the only acceptable version.  The number of documents used to confirm identity and work eligibility has been reduced.  Employers who fail to use the new version of the form may be subject to fines and penalties which could include imprisonment.

Supervisors hiring work study students, part-time hourly employees, and adjunct instructors, should destroy all previous I-9 versions and begin using the new form immediately.  If the old form is used, Human Resources will be unable to process hiring paperwork for new employees.  Please remember, new employees must not begin working until Human Resources has notified the supervisor that it is okay for them to work.

The revised I-9 form is available online at www.uscis.gov.  You may also request a copy by calling Human Resources at extension 8033.  If you are receiving this issue of HR Notes via interoffice mail, a copy of the new form is attached.

Please contact Human Resources if you have any questions.
