URGENT: Open Enrollment Follow-Up

ALL employees should check the deductions on their payroll stubs for accuracy.  The effective date for Open Enrollment changes is January 1, 2008; however these changes will be reflected on the first paycheck received in December, since payment for health and dental coverage is made one month in advance of the covered month.  If a discrepancy is discovered, contact a member of the Benefits and Retirement Team immediately:

Welcome New RETIREMENT COORDINATOR!

Jim Metz has joined the Valencia family with the Benefits and Retirement Team as our new Retirement Coordinator.  Jim brings with him ten years of experience at Broward Community College in the area of benefits and retirement as well as his experience with other FRS employers.  Welcome aboard, Jim!

Limitations for Rehiring Retired Employees

For the first month after his or her effective date of retirement, a Florida Retirement System (FRS) retiree cannot earn a salary from any participating FRS employer while drawing retirement benefits from the system.  FRS retirees, who work for a participating FRS employer during the 2nd through the 12th months after his or her effective retirement date will have benefits suspended for any months worked during this limitation period.  There are exceptions to rehiring retirees.  After being retired for one calendar month, a FRS retiree may be reemployed as an adjunct professor for up to 780 hours during the 2nd through 12th months after the effective retirement date.  If a retiree is employed as an adjunct professor for more than 780 hours, s/he must advise Human Resources and the Division of Retirement.  When the employee reaches 780 hours, retirement benefits will be suspended for the months s/he continues to work during the 12-month limitation period.

Flexible Reimbursement Claim Form Deadline

Be reminded that the deadline for filing claims for 2007 medical or dependent care reimbursement money is March 28, 2008.  Claims submitted for 2007 money must be for services that were incurred in the plan year 2007.  Memorandums will be sent to employees who still have outstanding money in their account(s).  If you need claim forms, they can be accessed online at www.valenciacc.edu/HR/benefits.asp .

Making Changes Due to Qualifying Events

Outside of making changes to health insurance and flexible reimbursement accounts during the annual open enrollment period, employees can make changes during the year if they experience a qualifying event in their life.  Such events would include marriage, divorce, birth or adoption of a child, over-age dependent, and change in work status of employee or spouse (i.e., termination of employment of spouse, leave of absence without pay, etc.).  When a qualifying event occurs, employees must notify Human Resources within 30 days of the date of the event to initiate any change(s).  If notification is not received within that timeframe, employees must wait until the annual open enrollment period to make the change(s).

Please distribute this bulletin to all full-time employees within your department.  If they should have questions regarding the above information, please direct them to contact Human Resources at x8033.
